The Fraunhofer Institute for Toxicology and Experimental Medicine (ITEM), also known as “Fraunhofer ITEM” for short, is an institution of the Fraunhofer Society . The institute is based in Hanover and its activities can be assigned to applied research and development in the natural sciences in the fields of biomedicine , biotechnology and toxicology .

history

The history of the institute begins in 1981, when the Fraunhofer Institute for Toxicology and Aerosol Research (ITA) moved into a new building in Hanover and began its first research work with 40 employees. The institute address at Nikolai-Fuchs-Strasse 1 is reminiscent of the Russian aerosol researcher Nikolai Albertowitsch Fuchs .

Until then, the Fraunhofer ITA was located in Grafschaft (Schmallenberg) and Münster . The Münster part moved to Hanover. At the Grafschaft location, the Fraunhofer Institute for Environmental Chemistry and Ecotoxology (IUCT) was initially set up as a successor institute; today this is part of the Fraunhofer Institute for Molecular Biology and Applied Ecology (IME).

The laboratory building in Hanover included an animal house specially equipped for inhalation toxicology research. The institute was still located on Feodor-Lynen-Strasse on the green meadow, because it was not until a few years later that the Medical Park, a high-tech center for the life sciences, was to become the site. The first research work focused on the health effects of diesel soot, especially those causing lung tumors.

In 1996, the areas of mechanistic and molecular toxicology, modern medical biotechnology and clinical research were established. The name was changed to "Fraunhofer Institute for Toxicology and Experimental Medicine" in 2003.

In 2006 a Fraunhofer project group “Personalized Tumor Therapy” was set up at the University of Regensburg.

Since January 2008, “Pharmaceutical Biotechnology” has been a division of the Fraunhofer ITEM in Hanover, based in Braunschweig. This working group was previously part of the Helmholtz Center for Infection Research (HZI).

From 2011, the Clinical Research Center Hanover (CRC Hanover), a study center for clinical respiratory diseases, will be created in cooperation with the Hannover Medical School (MHH) and the Helmholtz Center for Infection Research (HZI).

Research and Development

The institute's focal points are thematically divided into six business areas:

  • Chemical safety and toxicology
  • Respiratory research
  • Translational medical technology
  • Preclinical pharmacology and toxicology
  • Personalized tumor therapy (at the Regensburg site)
  • Pharmaceutical biotechnology (at the Braunschweig site)

Research for human health, both from a preventive medical point of view and with regard to the development of diagnostic methods and innovative therapy concepts, is the focus of the Fraunhofer ITEM.

The spectrum of research and development activities of the Fraunhofer ITEM ranges from preclinical and clinical pharmaceutical research and development, allergy and asthma research to studies on commercial, environmental toxicology and consumer protection as well as testing and registration of chemicals, biocides and pesticides.

Cooperations

The institute is a member of the Fraunhofer Group for Life Sciences (Fraunhofer VLS). The biological, biomedical, pharmacological and toxicological competencies of seven Fraunhofer institutes are bundled in this group.

In the university sector, there are collaborations with the Hanover Medical School and the Hanover Veterinary University , which also cover the basic research needs of the Fraunhofer ITEM.

Infrastructure

At the end of 2018, the institute employed 357 people.

The operating budget in the 2018 financial year was 28.9 million euros, around 71% of which came from self-generated funds. The share of industrial income in the operating budget was 50%.

The institute was headed by Ulrich Mohr until 1996, then by Uwe Heinrich until 2016. In January 2017, Norbert Krug took over the management of the institute.
