RSSOwl is a free , cross-platform feed reader for RSS -, RDF -, and Atom - Web feeds . It was developed in Java with SWT as a fast, native graphics library. RSS is a document specification that enables the user to collect, organize, and update news. The software is no longer being developed and the developer advises against its use due to security gaps.

history

RSSOwl started at the end of July 2003 as a small project on SourceForge . After 18 months of development, RSSOwl 1.0 was released on December 19, 2004.

On the download page at GitHub it is pointed out that RSSOwl - since 2014 - has not been maintained, has several known vulnerabilities and should no longer be used. Instead, reference is made to RSSOwlnix.

Functions

RSSOwl can export news in PDF , RTF and HTML documents. It also supports RSS and RDF in versions 0.91, 0.92, 1.0 and 2.0. In addition, Atom version 1.0 or higher is supported. RSSOwl includes a news feed search engine with keyword search. Its appearance adapts to the operating system on which it is running. Recommendable messages can be forwarded to different contacts. The program has a program indicator in the notification area . A simple navigation through tabs is possible within the software . The program remembers the read messages on restart and automatically opens certain news feeds when started. You can divide newsfeeds into categories and set a specific update interval. If feeds are faulty, they are marked accordingly. An import and export function of favorite news feeds OPML as well as the RSSOwl configuration so that they can be used again on another computer are also available. Web pages can be viewed in the integrated or in an external web browser . A connection via a proxy server is also possible. The authentication takes place via Base64 , Digest and NTLM .
