The Doppelraab is a two-seater glider manufactured in a composite construction .
history
The Munich trade teacher Fritz Raab (1909–1989) developed the Doppelraab around 1949/50 and built the first test model at the Aero Club Dachau. The first flight took place on August 5, 1951 on the occasion of the Rhöntreffen on the Wasserkuppe .
construction
The aim of the construction was to create an aircraft for glider training that was just as easy to build as it was to be flown and maintained. To this end, the designer Fritz Raab went some unusual ways. For example, the seat of the flight instructor is greatly increased, which enables him to operate the control stick attached to the front directly from behind. In this way it is possible to dispense with an expensive double tax. In the cockpit area, the fuselage consisted of tubular steel, from the trailing edge of the wings, the rear fuselage section was made of wood, as were the wings and rudder. Deviating from this, there were also hulls that were made entirely of tubular steel.
variants
Several modifications were made by 1955, so that there were a total of six different series. There were three specimens of the V1 test series that attracted attention with their unusual chassis with two wheels arranged one behind the other. The variants V2 and V3 were built by Hirth and had different seats compared to the original design. From version V5, spoilers were built into the wings, while version V6 had a wingspan that was increased by 64 centimeters, which should bring improved glide performance. A total of approx. 400 Doppelraab were built, approx. 100 self-made by associations and approx. 300 by the Schempp-Hirth company in Kirchheim / Teck.
