Rab Chisda

Rab Chisda (* around 217; † 309 ) was athird generation Amora in Babylonia.

He was a pupil and friend of Rab Huna , after some also a pupil of Rab and Mar Samuel , after the death of Rab Yehuda the most important teacher in Surah , was especially a haggadist and famous for his astute discussion ( Erubin 67a speaks, for example, of pilpule deRab Chisda ).

R. Chisda married the daughter of Ḥanan b. At the age of 16 . Raba , with whom he had seven or more sons and two daughters. His student Raba also became his son-in-law. He fell out with Huna on the occasion of an interpretation of the law about the duties of students towards their teachers. He respected Huna very much and did not publish anything during Huna's lifetime that contradicted his view. But it would be a long time before they were reconciled. Four years before Huna's death, Chisda founded his own school in Mata Meḥasya. After R. Judah's death he took over his school in Surah. R. Chisda made a fortune as a brewer in the course of his life, he died in 309 and is said to have been 92 years old.
