The Raccoon Mountain pumped storage plant with an underground power plant cavern in Marion County west of Chattanooga in the US state of Tennessee is owned and operated by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). Construction began in 1970 and ended in 1978.

During off - peak periods, the water is pumped from Nickajack Lake on the Tennessee River at the foot of the Raccoon Mountains to a reservoir at the top of the mountain. This upper basin covers an area of 214 hectares and is enclosed by a dam that is 70 m high and 1769 m long - the largest rock embankment dam that the TVA has ever built. The usable height difference between the upper and lower basins is approximately 301.70 m (990 feet). It takes 28 hours to fill the upper reservoir. During peak load periods, the water from the upper basin is directed back down through a pressure tunnel that was drilled through the middle of the mountain to the four pump turbine sets that drive the generators , which are located in an underground power station. The hydropower plant has an electrical capacity of 1600  MW and can run for up to 22 hours. The power plant is used almost every day and serves as an important network balancer in the TVA power supply system.

leisure

The facility is a popular resort for hiking, walking, running, and on-road and off -road cycling .
