Rachel Janait Ben-Zvi

Rachel Janait Ben-Zvi ( Hebrew רחל ינאית בן - צבי ; * 1886 in Malin (Ukraine); † November 16, 1979 ) was an Israeli writer and educator , and leader of socialist Zionism (ציונות סוציאליסטית). She was the wife of the second President of Israel , Yitzchak Ben Zvi .

Ben-Zvi was born in the city of Malin (Ukraine) in 1886 under the name Golda Lishansky. She was active in the left Zionist party Poale Zion . In 1908 she emigrated to Palestine , which was then under the rule of the Ottoman Empire , and became active in HaSchomer . In 1918 she married Jizchak Ben Zvi, who was also active with Poale Zion and HaSchomer. She and Ben-Zvi later had two sons.

Their son Eli was killed in action in March 1948 during the Israeli War of Independence .

In 1952, her husband became President of the State of Israel. As the " First Lady " of the State of Israel, she opened the President's house to people from all walks of life. During this time she published on topics of education and defense and also wrote her autobiography We are Olim (אנו עולים anu Olim), which was published in 1961. After the Six Day War in 1967 she joined the Movement for a Greater Israel , which wanted to annex the territories conquered in the war and which later became a faction of the Likud which was being founded.

In 1978 Ben-Zvi was awarded the Israel Prize for her special commitment to Israeli society and the State of Israel. She died on November 16, 1979.
