Rachel Anne Notley (born April 17, 1964 in Edmonton ) is a Canadian politician with the Alberta New Democratic Party (NDP). From 2015 to 2019 she was Prime Minister of Alberta .

Life

Rachel Notley is a daughter of the Canadian politician Grant Notley (1939-1984). She grew up in Fairview , Alberta and studied Political Science at the University of Alberta and Law at Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto . She worked as a labor and social lawyer for health insurance companies and unions in Vancouver and Edmonton. Like her parents, she became a member of the Alberta New Democratic Party (NDP). Notley is married to union official Lou Arab and they have two children. After her children were slightly older, she ran for the NDP for the Alberta Legislative Assembly in 2008 and was elected. In 2014 she became party leader of the NDP, an office that her father also held. In the early elections in Alberta on May 5, 2015, her party won a landslide victory over the Conservative Party, which had ruled for 44 years . Notley became Alberta's prime minister as the leader of the strongest parliamentary group. In the 2019 election, Jason Kenney , the United Conservative Party's candidate , replaced her as Prime Minister. She has since been an opposition leader in the Alberta Legislative Assembly.
