Rachid Maâtar ( Arabic رشيد معطر; * June 27, 1959 in Nancy ) is a former Algerian - French football player and current coach.

As a player in the club

Maâtar was 20 years old when he made the leap into the second division team of French club EAC Chaumont in 1979 and became a regular shortly afterwards. At the end of the 1979/80 season, Chaumont was relegated, which is why he looked for a new employer and found it in the second division club SR Saint-Dié . In this he also fought for a regular place and remained loyal to the club until he was relegated with it in 1982. He then moved to AS Angoulême , who remained in the second highest division , but could not occupy a permanent place in this. Nevertheless, he was poached in 1983 by the first division club AS Nancy and thus returned to his hometown.

He made his debut for Nancy in the course of the 1983/84 season in the top national league, but this was only followed sporadically. In the following tournament period 1984/85 it was no longer used at all. Therefore, he did not stay with the Lorraine, but moved to the second division AS Béziers in 1985 . In the Béziers jersey, he was back on the pitch regularly, even if he was not completely undisputed. However, in 1987 the club was relegated, after which he moved to the second-rate CO Saint-Dizier . At Saint-Dizier he was only called up in rare cases in the subsequent period and had to accept relegation again at the end of the 1987/88 season. In total, he was relegated four times with four different clubs from the second highest division. Subsequently, he went one more time to AS Nancy, which now competed in the second division. He experienced a season 1988/89 without a single use and ended at the end of the year of his 30th birthday after five first division games without a goal and 147 second division games with seven goals his professional career.

National team

Although Maâtar was never employed by a club in his home country, he was eligible to play for the Algerian national team. He was 25 years old when he first wore their shirt on May 1, 1985 in a 1-0 loss to Tunisia. He was in Algeria's squad for the 1988 African Championship , played in all five tournament matches and ended up third. The game for third place, which was won on March 26, 1988 against Morocco after a 1-1 draw on penalties, was also the last of nine matches that he completed for the national team.

Coaching career

In 1997 he returned to AS Nancy and then worked for FC Metz and FC Valenciennes before he took over as coach of Nancy's second team in summer 2007. He looked after the fourth-rate team until 2013.
