Radford Island is an ice-covered island in the Marshall Archipelago off the Saunders coast of Marie Byrd Land in western Antarctica . It is located 10 km west of Saunders Mountain in the eastern part of the Sulzberger Ice Shelf .
Participants of the Byrd Antarctic Expedition (1928–1930) discovered them during an overflight on December 5, 1929. Participants of the United States Antarctic Service Expedition (1939–1941) believed them to be part of the mainland mass and mapped them as the Radford Mountains . The United States Geological Survey identified it as an island based on its own surveys and aerial photographs of the United States Navy from 1962 to 1965. It is named after Vice Admiral Arthur W. Radford (1896–1973), deputy head of the air operations of the US Navy in Operation Highjump (1946-1947).
