A radial drilling machine, also known as a swiveling , boom or crane drilling machine , is usually a permanently installed drilling machine . It consists of a base plate, a column, a boom and the drilling spindle , the speed of which is sometimes continuously adjustable or is set via a gear . The tools are mounted using a Morse taper or a drill chuck . Due to their construction, radial drilling machines are particularly suitable for bulky, voluminous and heavy workpieces.

construction

The classic radial drilling machine has a base plate, the clamping surface of which is as close as possible to the ground. Its inner column is attached to the base plate. A jacket column is in turn placed on the inner column. A lifting housing sits on this jacketed column, which actuates a lifting spindle to move the boom up and down. The boom can be swiveled almost 360 ° and has a dovetail guide on which the drilling slide sits. Modern machines can also have an NC or CNC control so that drilling patterns can be programmed and approached. The programming is done using Cartesian coordinates , which are converted into polar coordinates by the control . So-called high-speed radial drilling machines have also been available since the early 1960s. These differ fundamentally in that the boom is operated horizontally by hand, the drill head is attached to the end of the boom and the base plate has been replaced by a machine table at an ergonomic height.

Use in the 21st century

Radial drilling machines were used from the beginning of industrialization up to the end of the 20th century as production machines for the machining of metals in tool and mold making . At the time of the economic miracle there were still many radial drilling machine manufacturers in Germany (e.g. Donau, GILLARDON, RABOMA, Weyrauch, WMW ), today only the Donau, GILLARDON and Weyrauch companies produce them. With the introduction of numerically controlled machines (NC machines) , the radial drilling machine ultimately became obsolete for series production at the end of the 20th century . Today these machines are mainly used in the production of individual parts and in training, and the demands on the quality of radial drilling machines are falling. Most of the machines sold today are made in Asia.
