history

prehistory

From 1964, British sea stations such as Radio Caroline and Wonderful Radio London broadcast from ships in international waters. These stations primarily played popular music for young listeners, which was hardly taken into account by public broadcasters at the time. In 1967 the Marine Broadcasting Offences Act came into force, as a result of which all British marine broadcasters had ceased broadcasting by the spring of 1968. The Dutch broadcasters like Radio Veronica or Radio Northsea International broadcasted for a few years longer before they had to shut down as well. The disappearance of the channels inspired Franz-Ludwig Pohlmeier from Lippstadt to close the gap with his own local black channel.

Beginnings and broadcasting

It all started with Franz-Ludwig Pohlmeier, alias Roger Clarke and later known as Paul Meier in Lippstadt. From there, Paul and his friends went on air on the medium wave frequency 1394 kHz under the name Swinging Radio Europe. The name was chosen based on the pirate station Swinging Radio England. In January 1977, the makers stopped broadcasting because it was feared that the Deutsche Bundespost (the approval authority for radio transmission systems at the time) would be targeted .

After the Geneva Wave Plan came into force (November 1978), the team started under the new name of Radio Sunrise on the newly selected medium wave 1485 kHz. From then on, 20 hours of rock music were broadcast every weekend. The ten-person DJ team worked according to a fixed scheme and received a lot of positive feedback via a Bielefeld post office box. The transmission operation was five years long maintained until Pentecost Sunday, 1982 to 17:35 the police with the help of a Peilwagens the Federal Post Office pinpointed the transmitter and confiscated.

Further development

The end of Radio Sunrise combined with a lot of popularity from the population led to the founding of Radio Lippeland eV in 1985. Thanks to a new broadcasting law and the start of Hellweg Radio in 1990, this new citizen radio went on the air for the first time.

On March 1, 2012, an internet station started under the name Radio Sunrise. Employees from the original broadcaster were involved.
