Avaya Inc. is an American communications company based in Santa Clara (California) / United States that specializes in telephony , call center technology and data network solutions. The company was founded on October 2, 2000 and is listed on the New York Stock Exchange. Avaya has more than 13,000 employees worldwide. Avaya's strong presence in the German market stems from the takeover of the German telecommunications company Tenovis in 2004.

The communications company is one of the leading companies in the field of IP telephony ( VoIP ), unified communications and call center solutions. According to the company, 90% of Fortune 500 companies use Avaya products. Avaya Labs, which are also part of the company and emerged from Bell Laboratories , focus on their research and development work in the field of communication technologies. Avaya claims to own or have registered 5,600 patents.

history

Spin-off from Lucent Technologies

On October 2, 2000, the Unified Communications and Call Center division of Lucent Technologies was spun off. Henry Schacht became chairman of the board. The first CEO was Don Peterson, who was previously CFO at Lucent. Avaya got the ticker AV and began trading at $ 20 per share. Prior to this spin-off, the company was part of Western Electric and AT&T for over a century .

Acquisition of Tenovis

In November 2004, the German telecommunications company Tenovis with 5,400 employees was taken over for 635 million US dollars. Tenovis was considerably redesigned when it was integrated into the Avaya Group, including the establishment of subsidiaries into which corporate areas such as assembly and service were transferred, the outsourcing of parts of the company and further staff cuts. In mid-2006 Avaya had 4,500 employees across Europe. Avaya employed around 3,560 people in Germany in the 2007/2008 financial year; At the beginning of 2010 there were still 2,900 employees.

Takeover by investors

In 2006, Louis D'Ambrosio took over the post of CEO and President of Avaya; he resigned in June 2008, stating health reasons. On October 26, 2007, Avaya was acquired by investment firms Silver Lake Partners and Texas Pacific Group (TPG) for $ 8.2 billion or $ 17.50 per share. The common stock was withdrawn from the stock exchange and has not been traded on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) since it began trading on October 26, 2007 .

Acquisition of Nortel's Enterprise division

On September 14, 2009, Avaya was announced as the winner of the sale of the Nortel Enterprise division. Avaya had won the bid for 900 million US dollars. On December 21, 2009, Avaya and Nortel officially closed the sale. Avaya now had 21,000 employees worldwide.

Completion of restructuring and successful IPO

On December 15, 2017, Avaya completed its Chapter 11 restructuring and was listed on January 17, 2018 on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol "AVYA". The issue price was $ 21.70.
