Rafał Blechacz (born June 30, 1985 in Nakel ) is a Polish pianist.

Life

He started playing the piano at the age of five and attended the Artur Rubinstein State Music School in Bydgoszcz when he was eight . In May 2007 he completed his studies at the Feliks Nowowiejski Music Academy in Bydgoszcz with Katarzyna Popowa-Zydroń .

Since 1996 he has been awarded at various music competitions. He took 2nd place at the Rubinstein Memorial Competition for Young Pianists in Bydgoszcz in 2002 and at the 5th International Pianist Competition in Hamamatsu , Japan , in 2003. In 2004, he won the 4th International Piano Competition in Rabat , Morocco . On October 21, 2005, Blechacz became the first Pole since Krystian Zimerman in 1975 to win the important Chopin Competition for piano in Warsaw , which this year was held for the fifteenth time since 1927. For the first time in the history of the competition, no second prize was awarded to make the gap clear. Otherwise the six best get a prize.

His debut CD with the 24 Preludes by Chopin was released by Deutsche Grammophon at the end of November 2007 and was awarded the Echo Klassik in 2008 . His second CD, released in October 2008, has the motto "Sonatas" and contains one sonata each by Haydn, Beethoven and Mozart. After the overwhelming success of his first two albums, on the occasion of the approaching Chopin year (2010), he decided to publish recordings of Chopin's two piano concertos as a third solo album (September 2009). The Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam, which was elected the world's best orchestra in 2008, is accompanied by Jerzy Semkow. For this recording, Blechacz was awarded an annual prize of the Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik eV in December 2010.

In 2017 a CD with works by Joh.Seb was released. Bach , where Blechaz did the Italian Concerto BWV 971 for Deutsche Grammophon , the Partitas No. 1 in B flat major BWV 825 and No. 3 in A minor BWV 827, the Fantasia and Fugue in A minor BWV 944, the Four Duets BWV 802-805 as well as the chorale about " Jesus remains my joy " (from: Cantata BWV 147) interpreted by Myra Hess . The recording was named "CD of the Double Month " by PianoNEWS .
