Rafael Chávez Carretero (born November 28, 1958 in Puebla , Puebla ) is a Mexican football coach and former player.

Life

Chavez began his professional career with his hometown club Puebla FC . He then played for the then capital club Atlante , Chivas Guadalajara and Deportivo Toluca , before ending his active career in the ranks of Club León .

He has been in the coaching business since the 1995/96 season and obtained his coaching license in 1997. Usually in the role of assistant coach, he has only worked twice as head coach: in 2002 he took over Club León four game days before the end of the 2001/02 season, but could no longer save the Esmeraldas from relegation to the second division . In 2007 he was the head coach of the second division club Lobos de la BUAP .

His longest and most successful time as an assistant coach was between 1997 and 2000 in the service of Deportivo Toluca FC , when he was involved in three championship titles . Then he was assistant coach of the Mexican national team .

Rafael Chávez is married with one son and two daughters.
