Raffaele Gargiulo (* 1785 ; † 1870 ) was an Italian conservator , restorer and art dealer .

Life

Raffaele Gargiulo worked as a restorer at the Muséo Borbonico in Naples . There he was responsible for the restoration of the ceramic vases alongside Raffaele Trapani, who was responsible for the restoration of the bronzes . In addition, he worked as an art dealer on the Naples antique market and was particularly responsible for the compilation of the collection of Baron Franz von Koller , whose holdings today play a major role in the importance of the collections of the Berlin Collection of Antiquities . As was often the case at that time, during his restoration work he often used shards of different vessels to create new vases, other shards were even made to match. In the Berlin Collection of Antiquities, which also came into Gargiulo's possession of restored vases through other collections, there are even two vases, the chalice crater F 2640 and the colonnette crater F 2882, which, especially in the case of the second vase, have long been considered outstanding and unique pieces , but by modern research methods in the 1990s they were largely found to be modern forgeries by Gargiulos, who only used the edges of antique vases. The vases are not considered to be forgeries today, but as a form of reception of antiquities in the 19th century. It also testifies to the high quality of Gargiulo's work. After Koller's death in 1826/27, Gargiulo spent five months on his country estate in Obříství to catalog the collection of 3,000 objects for sale. In the end, the contract was awarded to the Prussian king.
