biography
Tağı was born in the village of Xoşçobanlı in southern Azerbaijan. He graduated from the Azerbaijan Medical University in Baku and worked as a doctor in rural areas of the country. He later received a diploma in cardiology from the First Moscow State Medical University IM Sechenov . From 1990 he worked in an emergency hospital in Baku.
In addition, Tağı was also active as an author. His membership in the Azerbaijani Writers' Union was suspended after 16 years after he wrote a critical essay on the Soviet-Azerbaijani poet Səməd Vurğun , in which he analyzed his social and political views.
Another article called “Europe and Us” ( Avropa və biz ), published in Sanat magazine in 2006, in which he claimed, among other things, that Islam and democracy are incompatible. This article provoked protests in Iran (in front of the Azerbaijani embassy in Tehran) and induced Grand Ayatollah Mohammad Fazel Lankarani to issue a fatwa against Tağı demanding his death. Lankarani accused Tağı of insulting the Prophet Mohammed and mocking Islam.
As a result of the article, Tağı was arrested, as was the magazine's editor, Samir Sadagatoglu, and sentenced to three and four years in prison, respectively. After all, Tağı and Sadagatoglu only spent eight months in prison.
Rafiq Tağı died on November 23, 2011 as a result of a knife attack by an unknown stranger who attacked him on the way home.
