from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ragnar Rylander (born September 12, 1935 - April 13, 2016 ) was a Swedish researcher and lecturer at the University of Geneva , who worked for the World Health Organization for many years .

Rylander gained worldwide attention through a research scandal for which he had been paid for over the years by Philip Morris International . As a professor at the University of Geneva , he published scientific study results that allegedly proved that passive smoking is not harmful, although he himself knew that this was not true - as internal documents and personal statements later showed. The financing of the scientist was "top secret" for Philip Morris in order to preserve the appearance of independence and thus to make the credibility of the scientist bought appear as high as possible. This strategy resulted in passive smoking laws being delayed for decades.
