Ragnhild Vassvik Kalstad (born June 21, 1966 ) is a Norwegian politician of the Arbeiderpartiet (Ap). From September 2012 to October 2013 she was State Secretary, and from 2015 to 2019 she was Fylkesordførerin in Finnmark .

Life

Kalstad grew up in Gamvik and later moved to Karasjok , where she sat in the local parliament for several years. On September 7, 2012, Kalstad was appointed State Secretary in the Ministry of Renewal, Administration and Church under Minister Rigmor Aasrud . Her area of responsibility was Sami affairs and national minorities. She was the first non-Sami speaking person to take up this post. Kalstad remained in office until the departure of the Jens Stoltenberg II government on October 16, 2013. Before joining the Norwegian government, she was department head at the Center for Sami Health Research at Tromsø University and a member of the Fylkesting of Finnmark Province .

From 2015 to 2019 she was Finnmark's Fylkesordførerin . During this time, the Solberg government and the Norwegian Parliament in Storting decided that Finnmark should be merged with its neighboring province of Troms . Kalstad, who, like the majority of Finnmark residents, was against the regional reform in Norway , subsequently fought against the decision. The merger finally took place on January 1, 2020. In the local elections in September 2019, she was the top candidate of the Arbeiderpartiet for the mayor's office in Gamvik. However, she was defeated by a candidate from the Sosialistisk Venstreparti (SV). On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Finnmark by Soviet troops, in October 2019 she called for the sanctions against Russia to be lifted .
