Ragnhildr Eiríksdóttir

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ragnhildr Eiríksdóttir ( Danish and Norwegian Ragnhild Eriksdatter ; * around 860/870 in Jutland , † around 888 in Trondheim ) was after Snorris Heimskringla the daughter of King Horik II and his wife Gísla von Haithabu . Her nickname was Ragnhildr hin ríka .

Life

Few data have come down on Ragnhildr, her name is only mentioned in Snorri. He reports that Harald Fairhair had many wives and therefore many children and, after the battle of Hafrsfjord in 890, was married to "Ragnhild the Mighty", the daughter of King Erik of Jutland, with whom he had a son, Erik Blutaxt . Erik achieved a higher status than the other children of Harald, which is probably due to the fact that his mother was a king's daughter. She died three years after his birth, which is why Erik came to Fjordane to be educated by Hersen Þórir Hróaldsson .

Snorri reports that Erik "Blood Ax" Haraldsson succeeded King Harald, who was named Erik after his royal grandfather. He is also said to have had a daughter, who was also called Ragnhildr Eiríksdóttir, who was married to Jarl Arnfinnr Þórfinnsson on the Orkney Islands .
