Rainer Gebhardt

Rainer Gebhardt (born February 7, 1953 in Annaberg-Buchholz ) is a German mathematician and mathematician.

Life

At the Technical University of Karl-Marx-Stadt he was awarded a doctorate in 1980 with studies on the construction of strategies for sequential test planning. rer. nat. PhD . His main job is as head of communication and process management at the Sächsisches Textilforschungsinstitut eV , affiliated institute of the TU Chemnitz.

Gebhardt has been chairman of the Adam Ries Association since it was founded in 1991 . The focus of the association's activities is on the development, preservation and communication of the cultural heritage of arithmetic master Adam Ries , who lived in Annaberg in the 16th century. In addition to Adam Ries and his family, the general focus is on the arithmetic masters of the early modern period . Numerous historical arithmetic books were acquired and scientifically processed under the leadership of Gebhardt . Colloquia are regularly held in Annaberg-Buchholz on this topic, but also on other regional historical issues. The research results are published in the series of publications of the Adam Ries Association, of which Gebhardt is co-editor and to which he makes his own contributions.

On May 1, 2010, he was appointed honorary professor for the history of mathematics at the TU Dresden . Gebhardt lives in Chemnitz-Grüna .

He is the descendant of the arithmetic master Adam Ries in the 15th generation and a second cousin of the local researcher Bernd Schreiter .

Honors

In 2008, Gebhardt received the prize for "meritorious voluntary work to promote the Saxon museum system" from the Saxon State Ministry for Science and Art . In 2010 he was named Saxony Ace in the category “Art and Culture” and in 2011 he was named Ambassador of the Ore Mountains . On the occasion of his 65th birthday on February 10, 2018 - as part of a colloquium for the publication of Adam Ries' first arithmetic book in 1518 - he signed the Golden Book of the city of Annaberg-Buchholz. On December 4, 2019, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier awarded him the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon .
