Kurka's artistic interest is in the human figure, which he depicts in clay and bronze. He treats the image of man in different stages: in small, glazed terracotta statues, he plays through artistic questions as finger exercises. The small bronzes such as “Encounter” (2005) juxtapose man and woman as types and test the space-forming power of figure and architectural elements. Finally, the life-size, colored terracotta statues depict people as people with character and soul (“Toxic!”, 2008).
- “Kurka succeeds in going beyond the natural state of affairs and giving the figures an aura that captivates the viewer. ... The question of the identity of the modern subject is one of the most important issues that his art deals with. Kurka tries to embody the lifestyle of today's young generation with classic means in a timeless form "
