The Rainis and Aspazija Summer House ( Latvian Raiņa un Aspazijas vasarnīca ) is a literary museum in the Latvian city of Jūrmala . The listed house belonged at times to the well-known Latvian poet couple Rainis and Aspazija , whose life and work are treated in the museum.

location

It is located in the district of Majori on Jāņa Pliekšāna iela 5. About 250 meters north is the beach (lett. Jūrmala = " edge of the sea") of the Riga Bay and about 200 meters south of the busy Jomas iela .

Architecture and history

The single-storey wooden summer house was built in the late 19th century. In autumn 1926 it was bought by the poet Rainis, who lived here with Aspazija from 1927 to 1929. Rainis died here on September 12, 1929. The house was the place where his last works were created.

After the decision had been made in 1945 to transform the house into a museum, it was opened in 1949 and two neighboring buildings were added in 1969 - a stone house in the garden and a wooden Art Nouveau building from the early 20th century. A renovation of the museum was completed at the end of August 2016.

Since October 29, 1998 the house has been registered under number 37 in the Latvian register of monuments.
