Raj Loomba, Baron Loomba
Rajinder Paul "Raj" Loomba, Baron Loomba , CBE (born November 13, 1943 in Dhilwan , Punjab , India ) is the founder and CEO of the Rinku Group and a liberal democratic member of the House of Lords .
life and career
Lord Loomba was commanded as one of seven children in Dhilwan, Punjab, India. He went to DAV College in Jallandhar and studied at the University of Iowa . In 1962 his family moved to England. Loomba built his fashion empire from scratch. He started with a booth in Widnes Market , then ran a shop, wholesaler, and finally an import company, Rinku Group Ltd. The company has over 200 branches in the UK, offices in London, Delhi and China and is a supplier to several major retail chains.
He is married to Veena Chaudhry, with whom he has two daughters and a son.
Charitable work
Loomba made a name for himself with his fundraising and campaigning on widowhood in the third world. His mother, Shrimati Pushpa Wati Loomba, became a widow at the age of 37 and Loomba experienced firsthand the social and economic discrimination against widows in India.
Loomba is a member of the Rotary Club in London , the Institute of Directors and Freeman of the City of London . He chairs the Friends of the Three Faiths Forum , is the patron of Children In Need India and a founding member of the World Punjabi Organization . He is Vice President of Barnardo’s and the Metropolitan Police 's charity, the Safer London Foundation . In 1997 he was awarded the title of Asian of the Year UK .
In memory of his mother, he founded the charity The Loomba Foundation , which aims to raise awareness of widowhood and improve the education of their children in India and other third world countries. The flagship of the organization is International Widows' Day on June 23, the anniversary of his mother's widowhood. He was recognized by the General Assembly of the United Nations.
In recognition of his charitable work, he was awarded the Order of the British Empire (CBE) by Prince Charles at a ceremony at Buckingham Palace .
House of Lords
In January 2011 Loomba was promoted to life peer as Baron Loomba . Since January 13, 2011 he has been sitting for the Liberal Democrats in the House of Lords. He was inducted into the House of Lords on January 17, 2011, with the assistance of McNally and Dholakia . On January 21, 2011, he gave his first speech. His peerage sparked controversy when it became known that one of the three members of the nomination committee had been paid for six flights by the Loomba Trust.
