Raja Ravi Varma

Raja Ravi Varma (born April 29, 1848 in Kilimanoor , Travancore , † October 2, 1906 ibid) was an Indian painter .

Life

Varma was best known for his paintings of characters and scenes from the Hindu epics Mahabharata and Ramayana . His works are examples of painting that crosses Indian traditions with the technique of European painting. Varma is also known for depicting beautiful women dressed in saris .

In 1873 he won first prize at the Vienna art exhibition . Varma was married to Pururuttathi Nal Bhageerathi Amma Thampuran and had five children.
