Ralph Hertel

Ralph Hertel (born March 19, 1957 ) is a Swiss medic. He is professor of orthopedics and trauma of the musculoskeletal system and specializes in the shoulder and elbow. He is the head of the shoulder and elbow center in the Lindenhof Hospital in Bern .

Career

Ralf Hertel attended from 1963 to 1976, the primary school and high school in Lugano and concluded with the Matura C from. From 1976 to 1982 he studied medicine in Geneva , Sydney and Zurich . He finished his studies in 1982 with the state examination and received his doctorate in 1984.

After completing his studies, Hertel was engaged in basic biomechanical research at the Institute for Experimental Surgery in Davos until 1984 . From 1984 to 1989 he completed his training in surgery and orthopedics in Bern. With a grant from the Swiss Orthopedic Society (SGO) he was able to devote himself to basic anatomical research at the Laboratoire d'anatomie des saints pères in Paris in 1988 . In 1990 he received the FMH title (specialist title) for orthopedic surgery and at the same time was promoted to senior physician at the University Clinic for Orthopedic Surgery in Bern. In 1992 he was appointed team leader upper extremity at the University Clinic for Orthopedic Surgery in Bern and was appointed lecturer at the University of Bern . In 1995 Hertel was appointed deputy head physician at the University Clinic for Orthopedic Surgery and in 1999 he was awarded the Venia Docendi by the University of Bern with his habilitation . In 2001 he was elected to the Board of Directors of the Department of Orthopedics, Plastic and Hand Surgery. In 2004 the University of Bern appointed him associate professor for orthopedics and traumatology of the musculoskeletal system.

Research and Teaching

Hertel is active in the planning and implementation of basic and clinical research projects and the support of PhD students. He is a reviewer for the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery and the Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery . He developed the fracture classification introduced by Ernest Amory Codman to become the Codman-Hertel classification .
