Ralph Merton
Ralph Merton (until 1856 Raphael Lyon Moses ) (born June 29, 1817 in London ; † October 17, 1883 in Paris ) was a London entrepreneur and father of Wilhelm Merton , co-founder of the metal company and founder of the University of Frankfurt .
Raphael Moses came from a wealthy and influential Jewish family from London. In 1834 he emigrated to Frankfurt am Main and completed an apprenticeship in the metal trading house of Philipp Abraham Cohen . In 1837 he married his daughter Sara Amelie Cohen († 1851), with whom he had nine children. When Cohen retired in 1855, he left the metal trading house to Ralph.
On November 5, 1855, Ralph Moses and his family were granted citizenship of the Free City of Frankfurt . On November 27, 1856 he received permission to call himself Merton , after his native city near London. Ralph had applied for this name change on October 22, 1856 on the grounds that his brother Benjamin in Manchester had already adopted the family name Merton , since the first name Moses was not suitable as a family name.
Merton is buried in the Jewish cemetery in Frankfurt. His son Wilhelm Merton became an important entrepreneur, social politician and philanthropist in Frankfurt am Main.
