Ralph du Vergier Truman (born May 7, 1900 in London , † October 15, 1977 in Ipswich , Suffolk ) was a British actor.

life and career

Between 1931 and 1972 Truman appeared in nearly 100 films. After initially acting primarily in B-films , he was able to establish himself as a reliable supporting actor in British cinema, particularly during the 1940s and 1950s. He played the role of the seedy Monks in David Lean's literary adaptation Oliver Twist (1948), the cunning pirate George Merry in the Disney adventure film Treasure Island (1950) based on the novel by Robert Louis Stevenson , and a London police superintendent in the classic Hitchcock film The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956). Truman also appeared in several monumental films , for example as Tigellinus in Quo vadis? (1951) and as King Ferdinand in El Cid (1961). In 1959 he also played in Ben Hur , but here Truman only took on a small role as the companion of Emperor Tiberius .

In addition, Truman had been known as a busy speaker in radio plays since the mid-1920s. According to his own statements, he was involved in over 5000 recordings. He also took on leading roles on the radio, which he was almost always denied in the cinema. In addition, Truman appeared in several British television series from the 1950s, his last role he had in 1975 in an episode of Churchill's People . Ralph Truman died two years later at the age of 77. He was married to his fellow actress Ellis Powell (1905–1963).
