He was the brother of the painter Francisco Bayeu , with whom he also worked, and the painter Manuel Bayeu. He won a prize at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid and then traveled to Italy.

He painted frescoes for the Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Pilar, worked for the royal tapestry factory, for which he painted cardboard boxes as templates (with genre scenes that are now in the Prado), and made engravings after famous paintings.

Francisco Goya was his brother-in-law, with whom he also worked several times.
