Ramón Martín Huerta (born January 24, 1957 in San Juan de los Lagos , Jalisco , † September 21, 2005 ) was a Mexican politician .

Career

Ramón Martín Huerta studied business administration at the Universidad del Bajío. From 1984 to 1987 he held the post of General Director of the Guanajuato Industrial Association . In the 1980s he joined the conservative PAN party and became an active member. From 1999 to 2000 he was governor of the state of Guanajuato. There he used his veto to prevent the implementation of a legal reform that criminalized abortion indiscriminately. B. also abortions of raped women who should have expected prison sentences. The planned reform sparked protests across the country. President Vicente Fox , who was elected as a PAN candidate on July 2, 2000, and the party leadership at federal level also spoke out against the legislative initiative, even if critics saw less conviction than image reasons in the game.

From August 2004 he held the office of Secretario de Seguridad Pública , succeeding Alejandro Gertz Manero . He was considered a close confidante of President Vicente Fox , who had created this office after taking office to enable better cooperation between the Policía Federal Preventiva and the security forces of the 31 states.

On September 21, 2005, he was killed in a helicopter crash about 30 km outside of Mexico City , in which eight other people were also killed. Among them were Tomas Valencia, head of the Federal Preventiva Policy, and José Antonio Bernal, a member of the Mexican Commission on Human Rights. Huerta left a wife and three children.
