Ramón Rodríguez Chacín
Ramón Emilio Rodríguez Chacín (?, Santa Ana, Anzoátegui) is a Venezuelan military and politician .
Life
Rodríguez Chacín took part in the military coup of November 27, 1992 against Carlos Andrés Pérez . He was arrested but released early in 1994.
In 2002, Chavez appointed him Minister of the Interior. In the same year he was replaced by another military man, Diosdado Cabello . In 2007 he was appointed coordinator for negotiations to free Clara Rojas from the FARC .
In 2008 Chavez reappointed him as Minister of Internal Affairs and Justice. But he only stayed in this position for a few months.
Rodríguez is currently a leader of the Socialist Unity Party of Venezuela ( PSUV ). He ran for Guárico state in the December 2012 gubernatorial elections and was elected on December 16 with 74.7% of the vote.
Human rights
Rodríguez Chacín hit the headlines in 2008 when, as Minister of the Interior, he declared that the murders in battles between gangsters were not a threat to the public.
The Venezuelan human rights organization PROVEA criticizes Chávez Rodríguez Chacín as a candidate. According to Provea, the former military man is believed to be involved in the El Amparo massacre.
The US government accuses Rodríguez Chacín of supporting the FARC.
