Ramblin 'Tommy Scott

"Ramblin '" Tommy Scott (born June 24, 1917 in Stephens County , Georgia , † September 30, 2013 ) was an American country and later rockabilly musician. He was given the nickname Ramblin ' (English for' to hike ') because he wandered through the United States with hiking shows in his early career. Scott can play the piano and guitar .

Life

Childhood and youth

Tommy Scott grew up in a small mountain village near Toccoa, Georgia, about 100 miles from Atlanta . When he was 10 he learned to play the guitar and performed barn dances in bars. After graduating from high school, he joined a medicine show that went from town to town, performing there to simultaneously sell their medicine .

Beginnings

By 1933 Scott had his first radio show on WTFL in Athens . Over the next few years he continued to work on various radio stations, toured around with vaudevilles or performed publicly. In 1937 he met Uncle Pete, who owned a Home Town Show that Scott got into. The show was heard on WPTF in Raleigh , North Carolina . During the next few years he worked on countless radio stations, traveled to America or appeared on the radio.

Career

Shortly thereafter, Scott became a member of a well-known country band and became a permanent member of the WWVA Jamborees . In 1939 Scott moved to Louisville , Kentucky , where he had a morning radio show on WHAS radio station. During the day he performed with different groups. In the same year he married his wife Frankie Scott. With her he had a daughter, Sandre Yvette. In Kentucky he met the country singer Charlie Monroe and was temporarily a member of his band, the Kentucky Partners . Around this time he became a member of the WSM Grand Ole Opry , the most famous and successful radio show in the USA, for a year . Around 1948 he started his own vaudeville show, Ramblin 'Tommy Scott's Hollywood Hillbilly Jamboree . After starring in Hollywood films ( Southern Hayride , Trail Of The Hawk , Hillbilly Harmony ), he got his own show on television in 1948, the Ramblin 'Tommy Scott Show ; later he also moderated the Smokey Mountain Jamboree .

Scott had made his first records with Curly Seckler as early as 1941 and continued to do so over the years. In his career he was signed to King Records , 4 Star Records , Bullet Records and his own label Katona, among others . However, many records were not released under his name or Scott took them on as a member of a band. He recorded his first rockabilly title in 1951 with Federal Records, even if it still has to be counted as a hillbilly boogie . In 1954 he recorded other rockabilly pieces during a session at 4 Star with Tex Harper, including one of his most famous, Cat Music . Shortly afterwards he founded his own record label, Katona Records, with which he recorded for other labels for the next 30 years.

For the past 30 years, Tommy Scott has appeared again and again on American television, even in old age. He had to give up his Medicine Show in the 1990s because his wife was suffering from Alzheimer's . According to his autobiography, Scott was 90 years old in 2007.
