Ramin Jahanbegloo

Ramin Jahanbegloo (* 1956 in Tehran ) is an Iranian philosopher .

biography

After studying philosophy, history and political science, Jahanbegloo received his doctorate from the Sorbonne University in Paris . In 1993 he taught at the Academy of Philosophy in Tehran. He also conducted research at the French Institute for Iranian Studies. In addition, Ramin Jahanbegloo was chairman of the department for contemporary studies of the “Cultural Research Bureau” in Tehran. He continues to work at Harvard University's Center for Middle Eastern Studies .

The main topic of Jahanbegloo's research is the constructive dialogue between different ethnic cultures. He has written more than twenty books in English, French or Persian as well as numerous articles on western modern philosophy. Jahanbegloo interviewed numerous scientists and intellectuals from all over the world, among them Isaiah Berlin , George Steiner , and Noam Chomsky , also the Dalai Lama and Ashis Nandy . In recent years he has invited philosophers such as Jürgen Habermas , Richard Rorty , Antonio Negri , and Michael Ignatieff to Iran.

In May 2006, Jahanbegloo was arrested in Iran after returning from India. It is speculated that his imprisonment is linked to his comments on Ahmadinejad's statements about the Holocaust . Other sources state that he was arrested at Tehran's airport on April 27 when he tried to leave for an event organized by the German Marshall Fund . There was never a proper charge during his four months incarceration at the infamous Evin Prison . However, Jahanbegloo was accused by circles close to the government of having planned a "velvet revolution" in Iran in cooperation with "foreign embassies".

Ramin Jahanbegloo has been at large again since August 30th.
