Ramon Aramon and Jordi Pujol (1990)

life and work

Aramon studied in Barcelona with Jordi Rubió i Balaguer and Francesc Martorell i Traball and received his doctorate in Madrid from Ramón Menéndez Pidal . In 1930 he went to Germany and heard from Walther von Wartburg , Heinrich Kuen , Wilhelm Friedmann and above all Ernst Gamillscheg . He married a German woman and was assistant to Pompeu Fabra at the University of Barcelona from 1935 onwards , but was then kept away from an official university career under the Franco dictatorship, and practically in the underground, he had a decisive effect on the continued existence of the research institutions concerned with Catalan.

From 1942 to 1989 (initially at a politically difficult time) he was general secretary of the Institut d'Estudis Catalans (as well as its honorary president from 1989) and from 1946 to 1992 founding editor of the magazine Estudis Romànics . Visiting professorships took him to Berlin (1960) and Saarbrücken (1965).

Aramon was a corresponding member of the Real Academia Española and the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres (1979). He was the recipient of numerous prizes and awards.
