Ramon Picó i Campamar (born October 11, 1848 in Pollença (Mallorca), † November 13, 1916 in Barcelona ) was a Mallorcan poet and writer.

life and work

Picó was born into a family of modest circumstances. At the age of eleven he moved to Barcelona, ​​where his brother Miquel studied painting. Picó initially devoted himself to commercial business.

From 1889 he became confidante of the politician and entrepreneur Eusebi Güell . Picó was one of the founders of the Catalan group Jove Catalunya , which he also chaired in 1873. He was also a co-founder of the Acadèmia de la Llengua Catalana in 1881. He worked for the La Renaixensa newspaper .

From 1867 he participated in the Jocs Florals of Barcelona . He won the title of Mestre en Gai Saber , the master of joyful science, several times at these poetry competitions . With the plays Visca Aragó (1874), Depreosa (1884), Ferran V (1885), which received the Three Englantines , the awards with the Golden Jasmine for the best patriotic poetry, he earned his literary fame. In 1892 he chaired the Flower Games.

From 1900 to 1902 he headed the Center Excursionista de Catalunya and in 1902 the Ateneu Barcelonès .

As a writer, the historical novel was his specialty. At that time it was strongly influenced by the genre of the narrative folk song and achieved an extraordinary literary quality. In this context the historical poem El Martiri d'en Ramon Llull deserves special mention . In 1894 he published the lyric poem Garraf . He dedicated this poem to his patron Güell. He also wrote plays: Cor de roure was staged in Barcelona in 1871 with great success. La filla del segador was the first in a series of dramas on Catalan history. Picó's familiarity with history gave him the concreteness in describing his Mallorcan-Catalan homeland.
