Ramon Tremosa i Balcells (born June 30, 1965 in Barcelona ) is a Spanish politician and economist , professor in the department of economic theory at the University of Barcelona . He has been an independent MEP for Convergència i Unió since 2009 and was re-elected in 2014. He is the author of several books and academic articles on monetary policy, fiscal federalism and the regional economy.

Ramon Tremosa was born in Barcelona on June 30th to a family originally from the province of Lleida (the father is from Arenys de Noguera, Ribagorça and his mother is from El Poal, Pla d'Urgell ). Until the age of 15 he lived in Sant Boi de Llobregat , where he attended the Don Bosco School. He later moved to Gracia, a popular district in Barcelona , where he successfully completed the Spanish Abitur in La Salle.

From 1987 to 1992 he studied economics at the University of Barcelona and also worked in a tax consultancy. He stayed as a doctoral student with a teaching position at the university and received his doctorate in 1997. His dissertation was on the influence of monetary policy on the Catalan manufactured industry (1983-1995) on the subject. In 1999 he completed another Masters in Applied Economical Analysis at the Pompeu Fabra University . In 2006 he spoke out against the Catalan Statute of Independence.

Member of Parliament

Tremosa i Balcells stood as an independent candidate on the list for the Catalan party Convergència i Unió (CiU) and was elected to the European Parliament in 2009 . Since then he has been a member of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs and an alternate member of several other committees. He took an active part in the debates on the Mediterranean Corridor, the European Single Railway Area directive and the discussions on a common agricultural policy.

His political priorities include the ecological protection of the Ebro Delta and the prevention of monopoly structures

He was re-elected as MEP in May 2014 and has since been a member of the Delegation for Relations with the United States . In 2014, he and Andreas Schwab tabled a non-binding draft law in which the European Parliament asked the Commission to investigate Google's extreme market power.

Private life

Tremosa i Balcells is fluent in English and Italian and has a knowledge of German. He plays the piano, has sung in several choirs and has extensive cultural interests.
