Ranbir Singh Suri, Baron Suri (born February 10, 1935 in Rawalpindi , British India ) is a British businessman and life peer .

Life

Suri immigrated to Great Britain from Kenya in 1973 or 1974 . Before that, he worked in Mombasa as an importer for teaching materials. In 1977 he founded the jewelry company Oceanic Jewelers Limited , two years later he moved from Hounslow to Ealing within London . Over the years he built his company into a successful international corporation, his fortune is estimated at around 40 million pounds . In the press, his economic success earned him the nickname King of Bling . From 1991 to 2005 he was also a Justice of the Peace ( Magistrates active).

In 2014 he was appointed Life Peer at the suggestion of David Cameron and has since held the title Baron Suri, of Ealing in the London Borough of Ealing . After Indarjit Singh, Baron Singh of Wimbledon, he is the second Sikh to enter the House of Lords .

Suri is married and has three children.

controversy

Suri's call to the British House of Lords, proposed by the Conservative Party , met with criticism from various quarters after it became known that he had donated over £ 300,000 to the Conservatives since 2004 . The party was charged with buying a seat in parliament from it. The representation by the Conservative Party that Suri had campaigned for the rights of the Sikhs in Great Britain over a long period was contradicted by various Sikh associations.

Suri himself was explicitly not accused of any wrongdoing, he did not comment on the matter.
