background

Ranger Motel was the Red Dirt Rangers' first album in five years. The release was delayed due to a serious helicopter accident involving the three band members. It was also the last album recorded at Church Studios in Tulsa . On May 8, 2007, it was released by Ranger Records , the band's own label; later it was re-released by the Luna Chica Records label.

The staff included Bradley Piccolo, John Cooper and Ben Han, who have been featured on every album since the founding of the Red Dirt Rangers, as well as Randy Crouch and Don Morris for the first time . As a guest musician, Augie Meyers , whose music with the Texas Tornados has a great influence on the style of the band, was won over. The producer was Steve Ripley , who became known as the guitarist of the Tractors and is considered one of the founders of the Red Dirt music scene.

The first and last titles refer thematically to the genre of Red Dirt music or its place of origin, Stillwater . A cover of the Rolling Stones is included with the song Wild Horses . Laveña is the new recording of the song , which was released in 1991 on the Cimarron Soul cassette .

music

The album contains titles from the Americana direction, such as Soul Satisfaction or Spice and Sugar , as well as titles that can be attributed to Texas Music , i.e. a strongly country-oriented style, such as Red Dirt Roads or Laveña . The style was influenced on the one hand by the American folk genre around Woody Guthrie and on the other hand by styles such as Tex-Mex .

reception

The editor of Allmusic came to a positive conclusion in his review. He highlighted the musical mix of rock 'n' roll , country and western music and compared the band to the late Doug Sahm . He also noted that the album contained a wider "songwriting pool" than its predecessor. Overall, he awarded three and a half out of five stars.
