John Wooley

John Steven Wooley (born April 4, 1949 in Saint Paul , Minnesota ) is an American journalist and author . He was involved in about 25 books, including non-fiction and novels. He also works as a music journalist in Oklahoma .

Life

Born in Saint Paul in 1949, Wooley has lived in Oklahoma since he was five and grew up in the small town of Chelsea . He studied at Oklahoma State University in the late 1960s and completed his Masters in Creative Writing in 1977.

In 1971 he was on a US warship in the context of the Vietnam War. On this he acted as program director and DJ of the ship's radio station. In the late 1970s, he and his new wife returned to his home in Rogers County and taught at a college in Claremore.

In 1969 he started playing rock 'n' roll music for Radio KVRO . He was later employed by KWPR , a Claremore radio station , and had a show that aired at noon. In the late 1980s he worked for KWGS before him in 1991, together with the country singer Billy Parker to KVOO moved where he hosted for several years.

In 1983 he got a job with the daily Tulsa World . From then on he reported regularly from the field of country music for them and in this role accompanied the rise of greats such as Garth Brooks , Ronnie Dunn and Dwight Yoakam . His second area of ​​expertise was horror films. Until 2006 he worked for the newspaper. He is also a columnist for Oklahoma Magazine.

In addition to his work as a journalist, Wooley made an appearance as an author of fictional texts and comics at an early age. At the age of 19 he sold his first comic book script to Eerie magazine ; in the following years he remained true to this genre. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, he increasingly began to publish books. His horror novel Old Fears , a 1982 collaboration with Ron Wolfe , was published in 1991 under the title Who is Afraid of the Black Man? published by Goldmann Verlag . In addition, he published several non-fiction books that dealt mainly with pop culture topics. His works have been translated into German, Italian, Japanese and Spanish.

Furthermore, Wooley worked as a screenwriter in several films, including the television film Dan Turner, Hollywood Detective from 1990. He has also produced documentaries and TV specials.

Wooley made guest appearances as a keyboard player on three Red Dirt Rangers albums . In 2002 he co-wrote Gone Away , a single by Steve Ripley . Together with Thomas Conner he was responsible for the one-act play Time Changes Everything in 2009 . This was about a fictional meeting of the country and folk legends Woody Guthrie and Bob Wills . John Cooper and Brad Piccolo, members of the Red Dirt Rangers, starred. In 2003 he was inducted into the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame as the only author to date .

Wooley lives in Chelsea , Oklahoma (as of 2014).
