Rantzau barracks

Location of the Rantzau barracks in Schleswig-Holstein

The Rantzau barracks was a barracks of the Bundeswehr in Boostedt , Schleswig-Holstein . Their dissolution took place in 2016.

history

The Rantzau barracks in Boostedt was built in 1958 and handed over to the Bundeswehr by Prime Minister von Hassel on June 3 of the same year . The new building was the largest military construction project in the Federal Republic of Germany at the time . The Panzerbataillon 13 (the first through proposals for identification of M47 known tanks was) was the first unit moved into the barracks. Likewise the Panzergrenadierbataillon 46 (later 182) and the repair company 546 (later InstBtl 6) belonged to the first units of the barracks.

The Boostedt population was initially not well disposed towards the barracks and violent attacks ensued. The Bundeswehr was only able to alleviate this situation through various events . The barracks only got the name Rantzau in 1966 in memory of the noble von Rantzau family who had shaped the history of Schleswig-Holstein. During the Cold War , the barracks were occupied by units from Panzer Brigade 18 , which was under the 6th Panzer Grenadier Division until 1997 . The drone battery 6 was also located at the site. After tank battalion 183 and tank brigade 18 were dissolved in 2008, logistics battalion 162 and repair battalion 166 (formerly InstBtl 6 HEER) and somz were firmly anchored with the armed forces base .

In 2011 the Federal Ministry of Defense announced that it would close the barracks (with the exception of the ammunition depot). Until the end of 2015, the Bundeswehr was still busy repatriating material from Afghanistan in the barracks . A workshop of the community is already concerned with the use afterwards. The on- site practice area remains, however.

Due to the large flow of refugees to Germany, it was decided that from January 2015 four blocks will be spun off from the barracks and serve as an expansion area for the Schleswig-Holstein State Office for Foreigners Affairs / reception center for emigrants and asylum seekers, which offers space for 500 people, as the Accommodation in the former Scholtz barracks is currently overcrowded.
