Rapido (type of train)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rapido was a type of train of the Italian state railway Ferrovie dello Stato .

Characteristics

Rapido, in Italian the fast one , was a type of express train that was used in daytime traffic over medium and long distances in Italian domestic traffic. With as few stops as possible, great importance was attached to speed on these trains. They were always hauled by the most powerful steam and later electric locomotives. In some connections, railcars were also used, including the series ALn 773 and ETR 300 ("Settebello"). In the timetable , the trains were marked with the letter R in front of the train number . Today this marks regional trains . The offer was aimed at the wealthy and business travelers. Accordingly, the trains initially only ran with the old 2nd class , and from 1954 on with the new 1st class. Usually they also ran a dining car . The use of the trains required a corresponding surcharge in addition to the ticket .

history

The Rapido train type was introduced in 1931. The offer had to reposition itself with the increasing volume of car and air traffic. The basic concept of offering fast daily traffic over medium and long distances with as few stops as possible was retained. However, the exclusivity was given up, as the new 2nd class was increasingly offered since the 1970s. The Rapido train type was retained until 1987 and was then replaced by the internationally introduced InterCity category .
