The ALn 773 of the Italian State Railways (FS) was a series of combustion railcars .

history

After the ALn 880 and ALn 990 series railcars were built, Ferrovie dello Stato was interested in putting a smaller model into operation in the mid-1950s.

The new railcar built by OM had 73 seats and was therefore classified as ALn 773. The design also included a sidecar with 64 seats, the Ln 664. A total of 60 multiple units (ALn 773.3501-3570) and 49 sidecars (Ln 664.3501-3549) were built between 1957 and 1961.

The concept of the ALn 773 was developed from the older ALn 772 : They had two drives of the type OM-Saurer BXD-UL with axis formula (1A) (A1).

Because of the high level of comfort, the ALn 773 were used after the express trains on non-electrified main lines (e.g. Olbia - Cagliari , where they replaced the ALn 772 , or Bari - Reggio Calabria ); They were also used regularly on the international Venice - Munich route . They were later downgraded to local trains in the Po Valley . In 1995 the last copies were retired.

The successors to the ALn 773 were the more powerful but less successful ALn 873 .

The ALn 773 for licensed railways

The licensed railway company Ferrovie Padane , operator of the Ferrara – Codigoro line , received two railcars in 1963, which were classified as ALn 773.1006–1008, and two side cars RL 779.304–305, analogous to the Ln 779 of the FS.

The Compagnia delle Ferrovie del Mezzogiorno d'Italia , the operator of Alifanabahn , got 1961-62 five railcars (ALn 880.I.1-5) and four sidecar (Ln 774.R.101-104), analogous to the Ln 664 FS.

In the 1980s and 1990s, both companies bought additional units that had been decommissioned by FS and are still in operation today.
