Rasdaman ( spelling rasdaman as an acronym for raster data manager) is a data management system for array or raster data . Rasdaman enables the storage of any dimensional array, which is common for image data and sensor data, among other things.

Peter Baumann developed the theoretical basis for array database management systems at the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics . A first prototype for an array database management system was developed between 1995 and 1998 at the Technical University of Munich as part of the RasDaMan project funded by the EU. Relational data support was added later. Rasdaman GmbH was created as an offshoot and offers commercial support. The research will be continued at Jacobs University Bremen . The commercial version with additional performance is offered in a proprietary manner, while the scientific version is distributed with GPL server and LGPL for all client-side parts.

The data is saved via an object identifier , which is saved together with the array. Queries can be executed using the declarative query language rasql, which extends common functions from SQL to include array-specific functions. Objects are physically stored in tiles on the hard disk. Tiles and their indices are stored as binary large objects from relational databases. There is a hierarchical storage system for arrays larger than the hard disk.

Exemplary data storage

It can csv files, Portable Network Graphics and NetCDF is read. With a Java (programming language) servlet, Rasdaman offers access to the web interfaces for spatial data of the Open Geospatial Consortium : Web Map Service , Web Coverage Service , Web Coverage Processing Service and Web Processing Service , Rasdaman being the reference implementation for WCS and WCPS . Rasdaman offers integrations for the statistical programming language R (programming language) , the JavaScript libraries OpenLayers and Leaflet , the Geospatial Data Abstraction Library as well as the geographic information systems and geographic software NASA World Wind (satellite images), MapServer , QGIS and ArcGIS from ESRI .
