Manti Malietau Louis Teʻo (born January 26, 1991 in Lāʻie , Hawaii ) is an American American football player in the National Football League (NFL). He last played for the New Orleans Saints as a linebacker .

college

Te'o, who had offers from several universities, chose the University of Notre Dame , ran for their team, the Fighting Irish, as a linebacker between 2009 and 2012 and was able to set a total of 437 tackles . He has received numerous awards for his consistently good performance, including some of the most prestigious prizes in college football , such as the Chuck Bednarik Award , the Bronko Nagurski Trophy and the Lombardi Award .

Te'o achieved fame throughout the USA through a bizarre affair. He had repeatedly reported to the media about the accidental death of his girlfriend who was suffering from leukemia , but this friend did not actually exist. What initially looked like a publicity strategy that got out of hand or an unsuccessful attempt to counter rumors about his alleged homosexuality, or simply a macabre hoax , turned out to be a form of Internet fraud . Te'o had become the victim of a so-called romance scam . A male admirer had approached him with a fake profile, false photos and a disguised telephone voice and practically had a fake long-distance relationship with him .

NFL

San Diego Chargers

In the 2013 NFL Draft , he was selected in the 2nd round as the 38th player by the San Diego Chargers . Te'o suffered a foot injury in the preseason and had to pause the first three games, but was still able to establish himself immediately and played the remaining games of his rookie season as a starter . In the coming seasons he was not spared from bad luck with injuries and kept falling out; In 2016, for example, after being elected one of the defense team captains by his colleagues , he could only be used in three games.

New Orleans Saints

On March 21, 2017, Teʻo signed a two-year contract with the New Orleans Saints . After a quite successful season in 2017, he was called up in only 5 games in 2018. After the expiry, the contract was no longer extended.
At the beginning of December 2019, after the linebacker corps of the Saints was severely decimated by various injuries, he was signed again.
