An alum stick (also known as a razor stick or hemostasis stick ) is a stick-shaped preparation based on potassium alum , which is used to stop bleeding in superficial skin injuries such as those caused by shaving .

application

Alum has a strong astringent ( astringent ) effect. Applied to small bleeding wounds, it contracts the tissue and the platelets can close the wound faster. While it used to be customary to hold a compact block of alum on wounds, today it is more common to use an alum stick. It is most commonly used after a wet shave and when trimming and grooming pets. The stick can also be used as a deodorant , as alum hinders bacterial growth. One disadvantage is the burning of the skin caused by the effects of the alum.

composition

Alum sticks based on potash alum, KAl (SO 4 ) 2 · 12 H 2 O are widespread . Often other salts are added to achieve a suitable consistency. A classic recipe uses 70 percent by mass of potash alum, 9% aluminum chloride and 7% each of iron (II) sulphate , copper sulphate and zinc sulphate . The salts are mixed, melted and poured into stick form. Pens made from 11% potash alum and 89% aluminum sulfate are also available in stores .

Alum sticks made from a wax-containing mixture are less common.

Hygiene rules

The use of reusable alum sticks in hairdressing salons is not permitted, since alum sticks are usually not cleaned or disinfected after use. For this purpose, the specialist trade provides individually sterile packed alum sticks, which are disposed of after a single use.
