The Rathaus-Center Ludwigshafen is a 72-meter-high skyscraper, opened in 1979, which houses the town hall of Ludwigshafen am Rhein and a shopping center. The shopping center has been operated by ECE Projektmanagement GmbH since 1981 . The Rathaus-Center was built according to a design by the Bonn architect Ernst van Dorp , who emerged victorious from a competition .
In April 2019, the city of Ludwigshafen bought the Rathaus-Center for around 42.9 million euros - including real estate transfer tax and notary fees around 46 million euros - in order to close it at the end of 2021 for the demolition of Hochstraße Nord .
Location and facilities
The Rathaus-Center is located at the northern end of the pedestrian zone on the site of the former Ludwigshafen main station, which was torn down as part of the business card project and replaced by the new Ludwigshafen main station . It represents the so-called “North Pole” of Ludwigshafen city center, which is connected to the “ South Pole ” in the Walzmühle Center by the pedestrian zone .
The Ludwigshafen City Museum , which opened in 1984, is located on the first floor and shows exhibits from 150 years of city history as well as changing special exhibitions.
The center was also home to the former Turkish Yimpaş department store, which closed again after a short time and turned out to be a company founded for fraudulent purposes from the outset. The range was aimed at devout Muslims. The "Yimpaş Verwaltungs GmbH" collected investor money in Germany in the amount of 293 million marks in 2001 and filed for bankruptcy on July 31, 2002.

In the Rathaus-Center there are 75 shops on a sales area of 28,000 m². The total catchment area has 939,037 inhabitants. The shopping center is frequented by an average of 34,390 visitors every day, and the number of employees is 800. The mix of industries is dominated by hardware and textiles, with shoes and leather as well as food taking up a large part of the area.
Tram stop
The two-storey tram stop “Rathaus” of the RNV located under the building has some special features that can be traced back to the planned construction of an underground railway in Ludwigshafen and Mannheim . There are two unused outer tracks on the upper level, which were originally intended to lead into a tunnel that was to extend from the town hall under Bismarckstrasse to Berliner Platz . The approach of the tunnel can still be seen at the end of the stop. The exit in the direction of Ludwigstrasse, which is only planned as a temporary measure, therefore has very narrow track radii. In order to reduce the noise caused by the squeaking of the axles, a track moistening system is installed there. The escalators to the platform do not end on its level, but on a raised platform; The original plan was to raise the entire platform and bring it up to underground level. The stop is used by 10,000 passengers every day.
The lower level of the stop was closed when the last scheduled line from City Hall to Danziger Platz was closed in December 2008.
