Ernst van Dorp
Ernst van Dorp (born February 2, 1920 in Bonn ; † December 18, 2003 there ) was a German architect. He particularly shaped the cityscape of his hometown Bonn.
Life
Ernst van Dorp was born in 1920 to Carl van Dorp. The family had had a household item shop on Bonn's Münsterplatz since 1861 . Van Dorp studied architecture at the Technical University of Karlsruhe and in the United States . In 1949 he won a competition at the Karlsruhe student housing estate - the prize was a scholarship at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) in Cambridge near Boston . There he met Walter Gropius , with whom he temporarily lived. During this stay in the United States , he also got to know buildings by Frank Lloyd Wright and Mies van der Rohe , which at the time shaped modern architecture in the United States. Gropius offered him further studies at Harvard University , but van Dorp moved back home. Before setting up his own business he was a student and employee of the Bonn architect Wilhelm Denninger (1899–1973) and, during his studies in Karlsruhe, with Egon Eiermann (1904–1970), from whom he graduated in 1950. After completing his studies, he settled in his hometown as a freelance architect and shaped the cityscape of Bonn between 1950 and 2000 when it was the seat of government of the Federal Republic of Germany.
Van Dorp's architectural office was initially located in an extension in the backyard of his parents' house on Münsterplatz , and later in the attic of the house. Already at the beginning of the 1950s he ran it together with the architect Franz Schmidt under the name "Schmidt + Van Dorp". In 1967 van Dorp moved into a studio and office building built according to his own designs in the north of the Bonn district of Kessenich (Bonner Talweg 215). In 1970, the previous employee, Klaus Schmidt, became an equal partner of the architecture office. The later independent architect Karl-Heinz Schommer also worked there until 1981 . Since van Dorp's death in 2003, his son Jan has been running the architecture office alone - a well-known building in this office is the Telekom Dome stadium .
"Van Dorp knows how to incorporate contemporary tendencies in his architecture and to amalgamate them together with motifs and shapes from the 1920s to form a new and modern whole."
