The Ribnitz town hall is a listed building from 1834. It is located in the town center of Ribnitz-Damgarten , directly on the market square in the immediate vicinity of the amber fountain and St. Mary's Church .

timeline

The first Ribnitz town hall was built in the 13th century and destroyed by fire in 1384. The same fate befell the second town hall (destroyed in 1455), the third (destroyed in 1455) and the fourth town hall, which was destroyed in the last great city fire in 1759. The school next to it was also destroyed.

As the city initially no longer had the financial means to rebuild, rooms were rented in a private house for the council meetings. In 1795, the council acquired a plot of land and the building on it in Lange Strasse and Neue Klosterstrasse and converted it. For the next 40 years it was the provisional seat of the city administration.

In 1832 the decision was made to build a new building under the direction of the Mecklenburg construction officer and architect Johann Georg Barca , which was designed by the Ribnitz master mason Johann Georg Wilhelm . The location chosen was not the original place on the west side of the market, but now the east side. In two years a simple, two-story building of classicism was built . The bricks were purchased from the Schulenberg brickworks in Marlow ; further building material was obtained by demolishing the fishing gate and parts of the city wall by the lake. The inauguration took place on October 18, 1834.

In 1912 the school, which was destroyed in the last fire and housed in a wing, moved out. This led to renovation work that resulted in the room layout that is still preserved today.

After the end of the Second World War , the Soviet headquarters used the building until it was re-occupied by the district council in 1952.

Around 1960 a flat, triangular gable was placed on the central projection, which was restored to its original state during the last renovation in 1993/1994.
