Dallas Bartley

Dallas E. Bartley (* 15. September 1916 in Cave Springs ; † 22. November 1979 ) was an American rhythm and blues and jazz - bassist , bandleader and composer .

Life

Bartley attended schools in Springfield, Missouri , most recently Lincoln High School, and learned violin, guitar and piano. Until he graduated from school in 1935, he played in the school band The Lincolnites . In 1938 he moved to Chicago and worked as a bassist and composer, first with Tommy Rigsby and King Kolax , then with Earl Hines , Cab Calloway and Duke Ellington . In 1940 he became a member of Louis Jordan and The Tympany Five, for which he wrote Small Town Boy and appeared on Early in the Morning . In 1943 he left Jordan's band and founded the formation Small Town Boys , with whom he wrote songs such as The Band That Really Comes On , Cryin 'and Singin' the Blues and All Ruzzit-Buzzit for the label Coral (September 1944), Cosmo (1946) and National (1947), including a cover of WC Handys St. Louis Blues with R&B singer Annie Laurie . With his band he took part in various soundies in 1945 . a. also in the New York Apollo Theater and went on numerous tours before he finally returned to his hometown in 1969. As early as the 1950s, Bartley had begun teaching music theory in the state of Missouri. He was a co-founder of the Springfield Jazz Society and an agent for the local music union.
