Architecture and history
After Schierke gained importance at the beginning of the 20th century due to the emerging tourism , Schierke became an independent municipality until 1923, still an estate district . The offices of the place were in the factories building, were narrow and not representative. The spa and community administration were also housed in different locations. Since 1921 there had been considerations to create a more suitable administrative center. The actual decision was made in autumn 1926 and construction began in May 1927. The town hall was built on the site of an old horse stable belonging to the Hotel Fürstenhöh. The financing of the rather large building, which cost 162,000 marks, was supported by craftsmen, pension owners and hoteliers.
The upper part of the building was constructed as a half-timbered structure and rests on a granite base . On the half-timbered there are golden decorations and elaborate, regional professions such as carter, lumberjack, charcoal burner, but also the tourism industry and winter sports with tobogganing and skiing. There are frescoes on the beam heads . On the upper floor, carvings in triangular fields depict the native species of red fox and capercaillie . The carvings were made by the wood sculptor Christianus. The compartments of the framework are lined with clinker bricks. All building materials used come from the region. Two open staircases lead from both sides to the wood-carved portal. The raised podium in front of the entrance can be used as a place for speeches at festivities.
Inside the town hall there is a quote from Hermann Löns Im Harz in the entrance hall as an inscription , the weather question is a dress question. The entrance hall presents itself with red brick, granite plinths and a rustic beamed ceiling. Carved wooden pillars rise from the granite plinths. Originally, the spa administration area was to the left of the hall and the municipal administration area to the right. There was a caretaker's apartment on the lower ground floor and three apartments for officials on the upper floor. The heating was carried out by means of a hot water heater.
In 1935, on the occasion of the trial operation of a mobile television station on the Brocken, a television was set up in the overcrowded town hall . In 2007 the town hall was restored. The town hall is used by the local council , the local mayor and for cultural purposes. Concerts and readings but also weddings take place.
The town hall is listed as a monument in the local monument register under registration number 094 56094 .
