Rathbunella is a genus of bottom -dwelling marine fish that includes only two speciesandoccurson the North American Pacific coast from San Francisco Bay to Baja California . The genus was named after Richard Rathbun (1852-1918), a scientist who worked for the US Fish Commission and later for the US National Museum .

The two Rathbunella species are a maximum of 16 and 21 cm long and have brownish stripes or purple. Its body is elongated, cylindrical in front and laterally flattened in the rear section. The head is medium-sized, rounded in profile and scaled on the "cheeks" and the upper section of the gill cover. The eyes sit relatively high and are turned to the side. The mouth is pointed slightly upwards. The premaxillary and lower jaw are covered with several rows of conical teeth, as is the palate. The teeth of the outer rows can be larger. Males can have two pairs of enlarged teeth. The gill rakes are short and thick and covered with small tooth plates. The dorsal and anal fins are long and only supported by soft rays, the caudal fin is rounded.

Way of life

Rathbunella species live on sandy or rocky seabeds, feed on invertebrates; especially from crustaceans and nudibranchs. The clutch, which can contain up to 10,000 eggs, is guarded by the male until the larvae hatch.
